USS Arizona Memorial Tour Reservations Are Now Available

The National Park Service (NPS) is pleased to announce its new reservation program for individuals and groups visiting Pearl Harbor. Reservations for the USS Arizona Memorial tour are now available online at www.Recreation.gov. In addition, the official USS Arizona Memorial audio tour and the new Passport to Pearl Harbor, which includes general admission to the Pacific Aviation Museum, the USS Bowfin and the USS Missouri, are also available. The NPS will continue to provide tickets on a first come/first served basis throughout the day for those that do not have reservations.

"For almost 32 years, tours to the USS Arizona Memorial have been offered on a first come, first served basis,” says Paul DePrey, Superintendent, for WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument. "This new service will enhance the visitor experience by giving individuals and groups the option to make advance reservations for their visit to Pearl Harbor Historic Sites."

Reservations can be made in a three month period with a non-refundable reservation fee of $1.50 per ticket. Reservations and changes can be made via the www.Recreation.gov website or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Tour tickets must be picked up at the NPS ticket counter, located in the new Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, at least one hour before tour time. Individuals and families may reserve up to 9 tickets at a time and group reservations of up to 65 guests will also be available.

Historic Volcano House to reopen late 2012

Great news for volcano lovers, the National Park Service selected a new management company for the historic Volcano House Hotel and expects to reopen by the end of 2012. Hawaii Volcanoes Lodge Company, owned by Aqua Hotels and Resorts, has been chosen to run and operate the Volcano House Hotel located just off the rim of Kilauea caldera on the Big Island of Hawaii. The hotel, closed for the past two years, underwent $4 million in renovations by the parks department and will continue another $2 to $3.5 million in renovations under the new management group.

Mark Twain wrote in 1866 that 'The surprise of finding a good hotel in such an outlandish spot startled me considerably more than the volcano did.'

Creating more of Waikiki’s Beaches

After a two and a half year permitting process, a three-month project to widen the shoreline from the west end of the Kuhio Beach wall, near the Duke Kahanamoku statue, to the Royal Hawaiian hotel will begin in the coming weeks. Sand will be pumped off shore and “returned” to the beach, two drain lines will also be removed allowing for better flow without that impediment. The project is scheduled from January through March 2012 and will have temporary, partial beach closures of parts of Kuhio Beach, plenty of beach will remain available for your enjoyment.
